The original Bayeux Tapestry is a historical record created to be a historical record of the history of the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in October of 1066. This is the only masterpiece of it's kind known to be in existence. The manufacture of this work was entrusted to an Anglo-Saxon workshop supervised by Odon de Conteville, Bishop of Bayeux and the half brother of William the Conqueror. The original is an embroidery on a linen cloth using various colors of wool thread. It is over 70 meters long and 50 centimeters high. It is the world's oldest known comic strip. The panel we have chosen to have reproduced is based on a center section of the original tapestry. This scene shows men and horses being loaded onto the ships, and then the ships setting sail for England from what is now Normandy. This panel has been reproduced extremely well in our trim, including the Latin words and the border beasts which appear on the original. |
